The joys of being a Saint Bernard owner.
First- this is our first time ever having a Saint
Bernard. Second- I was the one in the
family that was keeping us from getting a dog, of any sort. You see we
purchased a home over the summer that has a yard that is big enough for a dog. A
home that has extra room for a dog. But also a home that required brand new
carpet and I wondered if getting a dog was going to be the right idea.
But my husband who has grown up with dogs assured me it
would be just fine. I thought okay, one dog. How bad could it be, I mean we
have 2 kids, one dog can’t be that bad right? So we started looking for a rescue
to go through to get a dog. And we ended up getting connected with the Saint
Bernard Rescue. We applied and they sent a man out for a home visit.
Lets be honest that was not a home visit, it was an opportunity
for him to tell us all about his Saints and to tell us funny things about the breed in hopes of deterring us
from moving forward with the adoption. We were aware that there was a
possibility of us getting a puppy, there had been one that came into the rescue
a few days earlier that we were asked to take. We had agreed but had to pass
the home visit first. As the man described the puppy stage I kept thinking that
it sounded like having another baby, and that was not something that I was
quite prepared to do, nor was I wanting to spend so much time raising a puppy.
After the home visit we found out that the puppy had been
placed elsewhere. The next day we got a call asking if we would be interested in
an 8 year old, Missy. It took some talking it over, but we eventually decided
that yes we would take Missy. The following weekend we made the 2 hour trek to
her foster home and picked her up.
Bonus- this dog is super lazy and will rough house for about
5 minutes and then take a 2 hour nap.
Down side- this dog gets foamy at the mouth while rough
housing and will shake her head and cover you and your family!
Bonus- she is super lovey, just wants to be loved and
petted.
Downside- she will stand right in your path just so you will
have to touch her. She will lay under foot, get between you and a counter just
so she has some physical contact with her.
Bonus- she is super soft!
Downside- that super softness is because she has an
undercoat. . . that I find in piles on the hardwood floors and attached to the
carpet, as well as my work clothes!
I knew that there were messes to be had with this breed. I
won’t deny it, I was aware. I just wasn’t prepared for how messy! The slobbery
water drinking, the drooling, the shedding, the slime/slobber. . . but I also
can’t deny how much I have come to love Missy. She is super loving and such a
great dog to have in our home. I guess I will just have to get use to the dog
mess for now.
